Tarbuttite, Broken Hill (Kabwe) Mine, Kabwe, Zambia TYPE LOCALITY

A sparkly and glistening thumbnail specimen of the rare and highly sought-after zinc phosphate Tarbuttite, presenting sharp, transparent to translucent, colorless tabular crystals on limonite matrix. The now closed Broken Hill mine (also called the Kabwe mine), in Zambia, formerly Rhodesia, is the type locality for Tarbuttite, and has produced most of the finest specimens. Fine quality Tarbuttites are difficult to acquire these days. This specimen is quite old, having been collected when the locality was still part of the former country of Rhodesia, as the label attests. I neglected to clean the specimen before the photography, which is easily remedied.

Dimensions: 30 x 15 x 12 mm.
