Serpierite
Serpierite
Serpierite, Serpieri Mine, Lavrion mining district, Attica, Greece TYPE LOCALITY
Serpierite is a hydrated calcium, copper, zinc sulfate. Its type locality is the Serpieri Mine, from the (pre-)historic Lavrion district in Greece. The specimen presents serpierite as gemmy, transparent cavansite-blue sprays associated with beautifully transparent, gemmy adamite, water-clear gypsum, light turquoise-blue rosasite, and white smithsonite. The rosasite forms rinds around the smithsonite and appears as a blue hue beneath the gypsum. The colors contrast beautifully with the limonitic gossan matrix. This is a super interesting and very fine specimen from the type locality, which has been mined since before the days of Alexander the Great, but is now extinct.
Dimensions: 40 x 10 x 18 mm.
