Cuprite (Var: Chalcotrichite), Daye Ye Mine, Huangshi, Hubei, China
Chalcotrichite, (from the Greek, “hairy copper”, in old-timer days known as “wire copper”) is an uncommon, highly coveted variety of the copper oxide cuprite. This spectacular, richly appointed specimen from the world-class Daye Ye Mine presents a chaotic, shimmering mass of electric, metallic-crimson needles. As seen in the video, the play of light over the primary area of mineralization (measuring over 3.5 cm in length!), produces a sparkling effect that is mesmerizing. The Daye Mine chalcotrichites made their debut in Tucson in 2004, and since then have become increasingly rare and difficult to acquire in the marketplace.
Dimensions: 3.5 x 2.5 x 1 cm.
