Cinnabar with Quartz, Almadén Mine, Almadén, Ciudad Real, Castile-La Mancha, Spain
Bright, translucent cinnabar crystals with intense color and striking brilliance are nestled within a host rock with complementary small Quartz crystals. The variation in crystal morphology is quite striking, with unusual polycrystalline growths, curvilinear habits, and vibrant gemmy encrustations. A Spanish classic, the world-class mines at Almaden have been in production since at least the Roman Age, and perhaps as far back as Neolithic times.
