Cassiterite
Cassiterite
Cassiterite, Huanuni, Oruro, Bolivia
A single prismatic Cassiterite crystal, sourced from the world's richest cassiterite deposit. Presenting fine en-echelon faces, complete all around and very lustrous, with a fine crenelated termination. Quartz, pastel orange calcite, and pyrite provide an attractive contrast. High resolution macrophotography shows a white acicular mineral, which, based upon the known mineralogical associations, could be wavellite, but this is speculative. The mine at Huanuni is one of the largest tin mines in Bolivia, from where some of the more unique and attractive cassiterite specimens have been sourced, at present, though hard to find. This specimen is circa early 1980s vintage, judging from the typewritten label.
Dimensions: 13 x 9 x 7 mm. Please note that the macrophotography is on the scale of <1 mm.
